I recently had an experience with Independent Fabrication where I encountered the most atrocious customer service I have ever had. I currently own 4 of their bikes, and used to be a huge fan, but I will now never purchase another piece of equipment from them. What once was a cool, high quality, and grassroots bike builder, is inevitably spoiled by management (Head Badge) who just think bikes are cool and want to make a buck (stole this line from Psmurf). I want to share this experience in hopes that no one else considering this builder will have to go thru what I did. Stay away from IF.

Ok, the rumors have been flying. Some said it was a sure thing. Others said it would never happen. Some questioned the rational. Well, I'm hear to tell you that it ain't no joke. The fire is hot and it's time to start cookin'!

On July 10th 2010 at 5:30pm, every last one of you damn Kenwoodies and Friends of Kenwood needs to meet at the OLD SHOPPE in Kenwood. After a lot of milling about and getting in the way of store patrons and walkers, we will ride some trails to the north and then head east for a good old fashioned party at One On One Bike Studio in Downtown Minneapolis.

There will be some beer available, but plan on bringing some if you can. Nobody is rich (except Fride), so it's a pot luck kind of thing. Drop something off at OOOBS if you want / can prior to meeting at Kenwood or pick something up on the way or just free load. All styles are welcome.

What's all this about you ask? Well, it was about 5 years ago that the Vitch closed the Shoppe doors for good and so why not have a fucking party to celebrate! As Husker Du said, it makes no sense at all, but that's exactly why we should do it! Not that we need a reason to drink. We all do just fine without one.

Special guest? Maybe...Who knows?? You'll have to show up to find out.

As the kit ordering over the past years has proved, Kenwood Racing is going strong. One idiot even got a Kenwood Racing tattoo if you can believe that shit.

Alright! Let's do this. Shine up your rig and head down to the Shoppe on the 10th. It will be great to see everyone, ride together, have a drink and remember the old days of Kenwood.

Wearing of Kenwood Skinsuits is highly recommended.

If you have any Kenwood memoribilia, drop it at One On One. I do and it's kick ass!

Oh yeah, all questions or hate mail should be directed to Ben down at OOOBS. He's an expert at that stuff.

I want to get a group ride together to the Cuyuna Rec Center on September 10-12. I am reserving a group camp site and want to know how many K-Woodies would be interested. This is going to be the premier MTB site in the state and will probably get the IMBA 'epic' designation. Let me know asap so I can get a reservation. This is primitive camping, but water and vault toilets are available. 4 bucks a night if 12 go for 2 nights.

Okay, I was rollin' along doing the Slick 50 and who did I encounter as we cruised up West River Road but Mr. Fitzgerald who hails from Burleigh f@ck#n* County (Hurl and I hail from said county). After making a bit of small talk and catching up on important things such as his 93-year-old grandpa, who is still ranching in SoDak, Fitz cut to the chase.

"Have you registered for the 5-O, Sean?"

"No."

"Well, the field has been capped at 500 this year. Online registration is open, and Perry has a fair number of registrations already. There is going to be no registration on race day."

Okay, I've been warned. You've been warned. There were 398 racers in 2009. Word of mouth on the race is fantastic so chances are the field will fill. If you have been entertaining thoughts of riding the 5-O sign up soon. The link for the 10th anniversary race is here:

Unfortunately, Thorny and Tommy Mac, the Citadel Slide is no longer part of the course as is the hellish uphill preceding. However, we'll still need to get up and over that same ridge from the last aid station and it's all new singletrack. Perry and his Ridge Rider crew only build quality singletrack so the new stuff is bound to be fun.

Don't let the Wrangler skinsuit in the picture fool you. The course is challenging. The scenery is spectacular. Every year I make certain to pay attention when I'm rolling along Spearfish Canyon because I don't want to miss the spots on the trail where I can see the creek 700 feet below. If you want to test yourself on a course with some quality singletrack and great scenery then the 5-O is for you. Perry and his army of volunteers are fantastic hosts. Let them show you all Spearfish, S.D., has to offer.

I have very exciting news…the Kenwood Racing 2009 kit was such a huge success that we are getting requests to order some more for the 2010 season. So, if you wished you would have order more last season or missed out, you might now have a chance. Due to the overwhelming interest, we have also decided to add to our huge offering of items a long sleeve skin suit for the cyclocross season!

Here’s the catch…we need to have a minimum order of 10 items to be able to place and order. So, if you send me an order request and we do not hit the minimum, you are out of luck. There were a few Kenwoodies at A Snowball's Chance but fewer than in years past. Here is a little taste. The loud exclamations you hear in the background are for Ben who was tearing down the slope on Mike's ski bike and buried his ski's tip under a hidden branch and completed one of the finest demonstrations of the principle of inertia I have ever witnessed.

If you weren't there you missed out. The weather was excellent. The double-figure-eight track was a blast. The location allowed the ski bikes to slide right into the fun. The beer was cold. The fire was warm.

As for this little movie clip it just shows that when it comes to gathering wood nobody can match B-Rad. Nobody.

We've been slugs, so I thought I'd post something, anything.

This is the view from the Presidio Yacht Club. Yes, it's the actual view. Note the sunglasses and gloves in the foreground. This place has tasty burgers, fine beers, and the most unbelievable view. And it's a dump.

I mean that in a good way. I love dives. It's like any bar in Nordeast except it has a really, really nice view--oh, and four burgers and fries with eight beers will set you back less than $75 sans tip.

The other nice thing about it is you can do this super cool ride to the Marin Headlands rolling across the Golden Gate Bridge, climbing Hawk Hill, zooming down to Rodeo Beach, and then screaming back through the tunnel to the bar. If the road isn't to your taste there is some tasty single-track about 3/4 of a mile up the hill after you have crossed the bridge

If you are visiting San Francisco you must ride to this bar. They have a web site. Look it up. Call ahead. When we rolled in they had opened early for a friend which turned out nice for us. We knew they opened at 4 pm and we rolled in at 3:20 in hopes they were open and they were. Picture taken December 18th, 2009.

Well, the single-track isn't as single as Fruita. The slick-rock isn't as slick as Moab. I was forced to miss the state cyclo-cross weekend. Life really is hard.

Still, the riding in Sedona is pretty sweet and the scenery is unmatched. Photo shows Broken Arrow. Cairn in left foreground shows the beginning of the descent through the saddle leading back to town.

I suspect there were a good number of kenwoodies saving themselves for cable or sitting in a hippie van last night, the numbers were slim at buck. Nonetheless, it was a classic evening of riding bicycles in the dirt. Some idiot put up a bunch of condo's that'll probably never sell on the north end of the woods, so the route went up the grass and into the singletrack at the northwest corner of the ski hill. Great course, hats off the Penn folks as usual. great seeing everyone who showed!

Here is my favorite shot of the day. It's Josh coming in hot at the stairs on his single in the Cat. 1/2 race.

Sorry, Becko and Robo. I have no shots of you to share. I was registering and getting ready for my race when the when the former was on the course and racing with the latter.

The young Lalonde shows his cross-country skills on the stairs in the Cat. 1/2. He was definitely the fastest runner. It wasn't close.

How are we getting him into some K-kit?

On the previous lap their positions were reversed. Ezra didn't get the hole shot but he did chase people down in the main event. Excellent effort. First place single-speed and then recover for 45 minutes and finish fifth in the Cat 1/2 men. I wish I had your lungs and legs.

I really like this picture of Tomac riding hard and duking it out in the threes (or is it trees?). Crop it and it's a keeper.

Went out to visit Otree and the Vitch last week in Boulder. Otree picked me up at DIA. B-lined for Vitches shoppe to recover my bike that was shipped out. Rode that day near Nederland in some of the funnest single track I've ever ridden. Next few days were tastes of the life that Steve has been living all summer long. Delicious.
Vitch hooked me up with a rental road bike from his shoppe. A Seven Ti-carbon lugged machine that was so dialed and nice it was very hard to say goodbye. Steve and I did a popular route out of town and went up. And went up. And when we weren't going up, we were going up. It was just another day in the saddle for Steve I'm sure. 14 miles doesn't sound like much. But when the elevation gain is over 4300ft those miles get stretched a bit. We got to the top and had some buffalo burger and beer. Then down. Wicked fun turns. Fast straights and then hairpin turns. A little beer buzz when going this fast is essential so you keep your wits about you.
On the last day Vitch, Steve and I explored some mountain bike trails that proved not to let us down. Three hours in the saddle and we were all done.
My legs are still recovering and my liver is in need of repair. Good times.

I've been exploring the fietsroutes around Leuven. It's the usual Dutch three-speed action, of course, but there are many more roadies rolling along than I expected. They are all kitted out and many of them have to be in their late 60s or older. Most of them are sporting a paunch but they are all still killing it in the pace line.

No High Life here near as I can tell, but I'm having fun searching for substitutes.

Tribute to the Soulcraft

When the whole world, or at least TSP, went 29er crazy, I scored the sweet orange Soulcraft that has become my only real mtb. It is different from my old Bianchi Martini frames, most importantly it is not broken and laying in the 1on1 junk pile.

I dug up some sweet pictures of the Soulcraft in action and at rest. This will be the longest post in history, so fill up your coffee!

A while back Thorny posted a pic of TSP ripping it up at WFBH on the SC.

Here are some that I have. The SC sitting in Aspen Co in the summer of 2006. The SC at WFBH for the BKB kit debut. The SC in Scotland. The SC in Fruita in 2008. And the SC hawking over Gold Hill Co today. The SC gets around and has not failed me yet, every time I ride it I smile like Fride.

I don't really know how TSP had the bike set up, I did ride it once at WFBH, maybe the day of Thorny's picture and remember that the brakes worked better than mine ever do, smooth like silk. The seat was also too high for me and the stem too short. Thats about all I recall.

In the 2006 Aspen & WFBH pics the SC was all dialed in for hot laps at Wirth. Kenda small block 8s, slr saddle, chrome white industries cranks with a 34x19. Well the gearing was all Aspen, but the tires and saddle were all Wirth. It climbed like crazy with that set up, but rough trails and steep downhills were too much for it. The sm8s would slip on the rims under heavy breaking on long steep stuff, Aspen, and eventually rip the valve stems off the tubes. I even burned my fingers on the rims during one of the fix a flat sessions. The WFBH set up was probably the exact same deal.

For Scotland the SC got some Psmurf built Chris King wheels and a Moots Tailgator and the super special orange flight saddle. even though it is not nice enough for Fride anymore. And some really stupid miss matched Conti tires. The SC was a great mule and got me all the way from Glasgow to a pub in the highlands. Also got some black WI cranks, the orange and black is a KTM set up to keep it moto just like the brake set up. The bb also got swapped to a Phil Wood, why not, I mean does anybody remember his grand daughter from SSWC in Nor Cal?! I don't recall the gear set up in Scotland, but I do know that it had to get softened up a bit on a short cut.

Fruita 08 it is about like Scotland, probably because the only time I rode it between Scotland and Fruita was to the Snowballs chance in Hell on Cedar lake during a cold snowy day, the only kind that is right for such an event.

In the pic from today the SC is all dialed in for going downhill, at least as much as a rigid steel ss can be! The wheels are the same old Vitch built Spot wheels that were on it in 2006, but the tires are now some old ass Tioga 2.3 DH tires that roll along at about 2o psi super sweet. Oh, and the gear right now is a 36x16, perfect for going up if I was CF. But it will be a 36x18 before the sun goes down on this day thanks to some help from the Vitch.

More than you or anyone wanted to know about my bike. Whatever, reading some bike ramblings has to be better than running another TPS report...

And the SC is heading back to Aspen on Thursday, first time the bike gets to go to a repeat city for a big trip.

Probably more error than anything. Sometimes you head out on a ride and do it all in the wrong direction. But even when a long ride is in the wrong direction it can still be sweet! I have said it before, fuck power hammer cliff bars. That is some homemade chicken pot pie and carrot cake and it was even better than it looks!

And someone, somewhere along the line, didn't care too much for a one JW... first most worshipful grand master of masons in Colorado.

Basically any time a week of racing bikes somewhere kicks ass we’re going to do a Ten Reasons piece. There’s just so much to tell on these perfect weeks that there would be pages and pages for you, the unfortunate reader, to wade through. We’ll just condense things a bit here…
Ten Reasons why World Cup #2 in Offenburg was the bollocks:
10. Turnaround. After driving to the best place in the whole universe, the Nurburgring Nordschlieffe, only to find it closed to Touristenfahrten unexpectedly, then driving through rush hour traffic to get to our bleloved Feirenhaus Woerner in Durbach, Germany, then riding in the rain and dark instead of the Belgian sun team morale wasn’t exactly low, but it sure wasn’t at an all time high. Then, the turnaround, Elke and Tom brought home delicious dinner (not just schnitzel) from the local Winestuba and all was good.
9. The Ferienhaus Worner. This place is awesome. Lots of awesome stuff happens here, like a previously unarable piece of vineyard being swiftly converted into terraced perfection, ready for grapes to take over. The view is nice too… Which works out well, because we were completely enthralled with watching the Excavator operator paint lines on this particular canvas for the better part of an afternoon. In between watching the vineyard cats stalk things…
8. Uncut macaroni. Elke likes to keep us on our toes at the grocery store. This time she found some pasta that was essentially spaghetti length mac. Awesome. A delicious bolognaise sauce covered it’s enhanced surface area quite well… That wasn’t enough through, we had to innovate a bit. The mac snail was born… Roll up your mac, stick a toothpick through it, garnish as desired… Yup, we get pretty bored.
7. Unexpected quality singletrack. After a couple days of R and R, Oli and I headed out for a “few hours steady on the road”. We made it about half of that before we decided we were “lost” and had better follow this trail sign to some town we recognized. Before we knew it we were getting strung along a pretty epic ridgeline singletrack with signs to the Mooskopf, which I vaguely remembered seeing signs to last year. We committed to my memory and wound up doing a sweet ride to the highest point in this corner of the Black Forest, just as the clouds broke. Awesome.
6. A darn good bike track with roughly a ton of people out to watch. There’s a bunch of trails in the Offenburg ‘burb of Rammersweier. Most of ‘em are pretty fun when the dirt is absolutely perfect. Like concrete perfect. With perfect 70 degree sunshine. And proper thousands of people, a LOT of people, most of whom adhered to the German spectator code, that being beer, brats and YELLING… It was rad.
5. Respectable start position and narrow start loops. When you’re on the second and third row, as Oli and I were, you can actually race from the gun. It’s handy.4. Good legs. Yup, good start position and good legs mean you get to ride at the front. It’s kind of strangely easier up there. Stay with the group, get a bit of draft, try not to crash into something someone else just jumped over, don’t even try to respond when Absalon attacks and things will be surprisingly manageable. When you have the aforementioned really good legs.
3. Ill fated “attacks”. I don’t think what I did really qualified as an attack, but on the fifth lap, after sitting in a bunch and thinking I was riding comfortably with the leaders, I figured I’d try my (meager) hand. This hand pretty much involved thinking I could ride 1k of the course faster than the rest. A downhill bit, not surprisingly… To earn this opportunity I pulled the second place group of five around the whole fifth lap. I figured that would get my karma in order for a low-blow singletrack surge. I was foiled. Some swiss guy, Florian Vogel, jumped me into the woods and I had to do what I’d already been doing, ride plenty fast and have a good time. But not get a 1-3 second gap of glory as I’d envisioned. I figured I’d try, a top three result being an automatic Olympic Spot and all…
2. Being Humbled. After a strange uphill root bobble by Flo I led the rest of the lap and was still feeling spry. Then the real guys started playing their (substantial) hands. Sauser surged and blew things to bits. I got dropped. Then I got a bit tired. The big ring challenge was getting to the good legs. Weird… Damage control went into effect and worked out fine, I slid back to 8th, a coupe minutes off the winner. I’ll take it at World Cup #2. I’m not even supposed to be in shape yet… That’s OK though, Oli and I have a good training camp planned in the French Alps so we can get ourselves together. He was wise enough to ride the Anthem today and had a good time ripping around, ending up 30th. We can both build on this week for sure. It’ll be good.
1. Relaxing. We’ve been doing lots this week, and it turns out it’s good for you. Makes you fast, and fresh, and generally promotes good feeling. (but doesn’t completely cure clumsiness, as we broke two glasses and two plates this week…) We ended the week with some nice sunset relaxing with our hosts, Rita and Felix, along with the Slovenian women’s team who stayed downstairs, enjoying some of their fantastic local Weissvein and Rotvein. Overall this week kicked ass.

Tonight's action at Buck Hill was spot on. Tomac killed it with a 12th overall with a strong field ahead of him. Even some skinny ass dude from Boulder was in the mix. Stone rode hard with Pete Chow and then won the mac daddy prize of the night. Bob Brown saved my bacon, just about dropped me on the climbs, pulled me back to reality, then let me loose. Cheers BBBB. I still owe you a burger and a beer. The GFride and the Fride raced, smiled and looked good doing it. Silent Richard got the worst chain suck ever. Jodie K showed Hans Solo, raced and seemed pretty damn happy about it. Buck Thorn Killer was there, size XL, making fools pay. Side Burns and Maria were racing, winning swag and looking for results. Stacy, Tracy, Owen, Jada, Jackson, Audrey, Isabel, Hans, Rosa, Silvia, Daddy Deanweed, Katie, Owen, Eddie, all there enjoying a killer night of racing, beer, friends and family. Somebody I'm forgetting. Another Matt I believe. Yep, if I'm remembering his name right, there were two Matt's flying the Kenwood colors tonight. Can't beat that. Missed the Alexander crew and some other WFBH KRacers semi-regulars for sure. Sometime soon we need the One On One boys and girls, the CRC crew and a certain NoShowTree to rally down there and really get some shit going. Beer Hand-Ups, smoking at the starting line, general mayhem. The good shit!

Superfan Action
